On March 20, 2023 the ceremony of handover of 25 000 tons of Ukrainian wheat procured to Kenya under Grain from Ukraine humanitarian program, initiated by the President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy, was held in Mombasa.

Deputy President of Kenya Rigathi Gachagua, Cabinet Secretary for East African Community, Arid and Semi Arid Lands and Regional Development Rebecca Miano, Cabinet Secretary for Roads and Transport of Kenya Kipchumba Murkomen, Cabinet Secretary for Education Ezekiel Machogu, Ambassador of Ukraine to Kenya Andrii Pravednyk, ambassadors and representatives of the donor countries –

Belgium, Czech Republic, Netherlands, Norway, United Kingdom and United States, UN Resident Coordinator in Kenya Stephen Jackson, World Food Program Representative and Country Director Lauren Landis, ambassador of Grain from Ukraine on the African continent Christopher Fomunyoh took part in the event.

Addressing officials and media Ambassador of Ukraine to Kenya Andrii Pravednyk stressed on historical importance of the event, which proves solidarity of Ukrainian people with Kenyans suffering from severe draught. Notwithstanding heavy losses caused by ongoing Russian aggression, Ukraine will spare no efforts to stand as a reliable guarantor of food security in Eastern Africa. Ambassador of Ukraine thanked representatives of the WFP and all the donor-countries for supporting Ukrainian humanitarian initiative.

Dr. Fomunyoh stressed leadership of the President of Ukraine in promoting Grain from Ukraine initiative and called for continuous efforts to bring peace to Ukraine.

Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua on behalf of the Kenyan Government expressed his gratitude for wheat assistance, which will allow to stabilize food supplies for extremely food insecure categories of population in Kenyan northern counties. He also voiced special appreciation to «industriousness and resilience of Ukrainian farmers, who continue to feed the world against all the odds of war».
