On April 26, 2023, on the occasion of commemorating the 37th anniversary of the tragedy at the Chornobyl NPP, on the initiative of the Embassy and with the support of representatives of international organizations in Nairobi the opening ceremony of the online poster exhibition “37 Years after the disasterі at the Chornobyl Power Plant: The world should know the actual impacts from the nuclear disaster” was held.
The online exhibition, which aims to draw attention to the disasters, the heroic deed of the liquidators and the effects of radiation on human health and the environment, is available here: https://hiroshimaandnagasakimessages.wordpress.com/.
In the speech at the opening of the exhibition, Ambassador Andrii Pravednyk noted that, unfortunately, the lessons of the Chernobyl disaster were not properly learned. Last year, Russian troops invaded the territory of the Chernobyl NPP and almost paralyzed its work. Moreover, the use of heavy military equipment in the contaminated territories led to a serious increase in the level of radiation in the regions, which once again endangered the lives and health of Ukrainian families. Until now, the Russian invaders are occupying another important facility - the Zaporizhzhia NPP, which is biggest NPP in Europe. Constant shelling as well as using the station as a shield threatens the world with, even larger-scale nuclear disaster.
Ambassador thanked the representatives of the UNEP and UN-Habitat the representative of which took part in the ceremony and called on the guests to honor the memory of Ukrainian heroes who protected our Motherland 37 years ago and laid down their lives for the liberation of Ukraine with a minute of silence.
