Today we light a candle of remembrance to honour the memory of Ukrainians who died during Holodomor.
The mass physical destruction of the Ukrainians in 1932-1933 was a deliberate act of genocide by the Stalinist regime aimed at the extermination of Ukrainians as a nation. By creating a large-scale famine-
Holodomor, the Soviet government tried to overcome the resistance of the Ukrainian peasantry to join collective farms as well as to punish independence-minded Ukrainians who posed a threat to his totalitarian authority. Thus, the Communist Party expropriated the harvest and all the food, leaving no chance for families to survive.
Official Soviet propaganda denied the famine and suppressed any information about it. Only after many decades with Ukraine’s independence the truth about this crime against humanity came to light.
