The Committee of Permanent Representatives to the United Nations Environment Programme met on Tuesday, June 14, 2016, for its 135th regular meeting at the UN headquarters in Nairobi to discuss and evaluate the outcome of the 2nd session of the United Nations Environment Assembly, held from 23 to 27 May this year.
Many delegations noted the diversity and importance of the UNEA-2 decisions aimed at meeting the environmental challenges facing the world today, particularly in the context of delivering on the environmental dimension of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
Ukrainian side emphasized that the spirit of unanimity within UNEA reflects the common vision and universal approach of all states to key issues of global environmental agenda, including in the case of resolution on the protection of the environment in areas affected by armed conflict, and called for its proper implementation.
Other delegations, stressing timely relevance of the issue, emphasized collective efforts to create a truly universal instrument that managed to cover all possible aspects of the environmental protection in times of conflicts.
The delegates also expressed gratitude to the Executive Director of UNEP Achim Steiner, who soon ends his tenure, for his professional management and leadership in recent years.
