Trade and Economic relations between Ukraine and the United Republic of Tanzania

Tanzania is one of Ukraine's major trade and economic partners in the East African region.

Of the more than fifty countries on the African continent, Tanzania is one of the most important consumers of Ukrainian goods.

According to the data from the State Statistics Service of Ukraine in 2019 bilateral trade between Ukraine and Tanzania amounted to 27.65 million USD.

Exports from Ukraine to Tanzania totaled 19.78 million (increased up to 113.6% compared to 2018), imports - 7.78 million USD (accounting for 61.8% of 2018).

In 2019, the positive balance of foreign trade between Ukraine and Tanzania amounted to 11.91 million USD.

The main articles of exports from Ukraine to Tanzania in 2019 were: cereals - 10.37 million USD (52.4%), fats and oils of vegetable and/or animal origin - 7.16 million USD (36.2%), products of the flour and cereals industry - 0.85 million USD (4.3%).

The main article of imports from Tanzania to Ukraine in 2019 was: tobacco and manufactured tobacco substitutes - 7.06 million USD (89.7%).

According to the data from the State Statistics Committee of Ukraine for 2019, exports of services from Ukraine to Tanzania totaled 521 thousand USD, imports - 540 thousand USD.

Exports of services from Ukraine to Tanzania comprised 67% compared to 2018, and imports - 84%.

The balance of trade between Ukraine and Tanzania in the services sector in 2019  amounted to - 19 thousand USD.

At the same time, travel-related services were the main exports article (57.6%). Imports from Tanzania were travel related-services (95%) as well.

According to the State Statistics Service of Ukraine (as of October 2020), bilateral trade between Ukraine and Tanzania amounted to 27.911 million USD.

During the period of January-July 2020 exports from Ukraine to Tanzania totaled 24.148 million (increased up to 89,8% compared to the same period of 2019), imports - 3.763 million USD (increased up to 74.8% compared to the same period of 2019).

As of January-July 2020, the positive balance of foreign trade between Ukraine and Tanzania amounted to 20.385 million USD.

The main articles of exports from Ukraine to Tanzania (as of January-July 2020) were: fertilizers - 16.168 million USD (67%), fats and oils of animal and/or vegetable origin - 5.133 million USD (21.3%), ferrous metals - 1.871 million USD (7.7%).

The main articles of imports from Tanzania to Ukraine (as of January-July 2020) were: tobacco and industrial tobacco substitutes - 2.129 thousand USD (56.6%), plastics, polymer materials - 691 thousand USD (18.4%), coffee, tea - 522 thousand USD (13.9%), precious or semi-precious stones - 135 thousand USD (3.6%).

There is a tendency of the increasing demand on the Tanzanian market for fats and oils of vegetable origin, ferrous metals, boilers and machinery, originated from Ukraine. There are also perspectives for the expansion of export from Ukraine to Tanzania of small and medium-sized agricultural machinery, cereals, flour and bakery products. There is a potential for further increase of export of grain, poultry and mixed fodder.

The development of cooperation between Ukraine and Tanzania in the field of services, in particular, in the tourism sphere also looks promising.

Potential opportunities for Ukrainian exporters are also based on open-minded environment for the establishment of foreign economic relations between Ukrainian and Tanzanian business persons, high demand for imports, the necessity for infrastructure development (water management, electrification), an expansion of the markets of goods and services, and the increasing demand for equipment for the extraction of minerals, oil and gas.

The dispatchment of the first trade mission of Ukraine to Tanzania in December 2016 has given an important impetus for the development of relations between Ukraine and Kenya in the trade and economic sphere.
